Character Personality: Yosuke is a friendly, goofy, observant character often used for comic relief. Firstly, he's very friendly with the protagonist when he first arrives. He invites him out, offering to show him the town. Yosuke isn't mean spirited or anything of the sort - from his initial interactions, he seems almost desperate to be friends with the protagonist. To finally have a friend who has something in common with him is a novelty to him, and he sees it as an opportunity to finally voice his opinions about the town he lives in, the one he hates and hates him back. However, the protagonist seems to have adjusted much more quickly than Yosuke has, and this leads to even more resentment. Yosuke's initial hurdles revolve around this resentment, and even though it's less obvious by the end of the game, it's still a defining point for him - in the sort of sequel to the game, Persona 4 Arena, he earns the title "Captain Ressentiment", a reference to the Nieztschean term that describes society's resentment to its oppressors.

One of Yosuke's problems is his tendency to dodge blame. It's not his fault that his father's the manager of the new Junes, it's not his fault that the people of Inaba are losing their shopping district to the superstore (they're the ones buying the products, after all!), it's not his fault that people don't bother to look past his status as the "Junes boy", so why should he be blamed for reacting like he does? He feels justified in being resentful because he needs to fight the town that fights him or else he'd be walked all over. And Yosuke Hanamura is not a loser doormat.

Except he is. He tries so hard to get people to like him, avoiding conflict when he can and offering what he feels might be attractive enough to get people to overlook his title, such as little freebies like Junes coupons or food. Yosuke is prone to retreating to these little peace offerings to help a conflict rather than talking it out because he doesn't like drawing out an argument and would rather end it, making up with dinner, his treat.

When conflict does crop up and he doesn't try to buy his way out of it, he usually ignores it or tries to play it off as nothing. In his social link, he usually does this with the girls who want him to help them with their working shifts. But even so, he's not above pointless bickering and teasing. It's really the heart of the situation that he loves to dismiss.

Yosuke likes to play it safe and tries to stick to social norms - he often teases Chie for not being "feminine enough", and he teases Kanji for not being "masculine" enough. When dealing with Kanji initially, he is wary of his kouhai because Kanji's sexuality isn't concrete heterosexual. It's never said explicitly in the game and that gives Yosuke a bit of gay panic sometimes. He also admires Yukiko for her traditional femininity and values the idea of being "normal", which is contradictory with his desires for things that are exciting because normal is also often synonymous to boring for him.

Because Yosuke often distances people through avoiding conflict and other heavy "emotional baggage", he doesn't have a lot of close friends. This results in his boredom when he moves to Inaba, since he doesn't have the big city distractions that help him forget that friends are people who you lean on for support rather than hang out with just to avoid looking like a loser. Yosuke craves excitement, as his shadow points out to him when it's confronted, to make up for this void.

Among his friends, Yosuke's desire to be seen as more than the Junes boy is more prominent. While it's easy to hide as his conviction to catch the criminal, he's more outspoken amongst his friends and breaks out of his "class clown" act more often when he's with them. He knows where he stands with them and knows that, due to their circumstances, they've all come to accept the darkest parts of each other. By the end of the game, they're one unit, everyone equal and playing their own crucial part, and so Yosuke feels more at home with them.

Character Abilities: Yosuke is a Persona user, which means he has his shadow, a suppressed part of his psyche, under his control. This shadow, now brought to life as a Persona after having gathered the strength to face life's hardhsips, has magical abilities when summoned, detailed in the wiki links below.

It's over.

Yosuke can't quite grasp the idea yet. They've only just defeated a god under a day ago, and now... Now his best friend's gone, summer's around the corner, and he has nothing physical to tell the tale besides the cuts and bruises hidden under his uniform.

His thumbs brushes over the number pad on his phone. It's too early to text or call lest he wants to come off as desperate, and that's just not his style. Is there even service on the train? He can't remember.

For a moment, Yosuke contemplates calling another one of his friends. They probably have the same issues on their minds, too. Their Leader has a similar effect on all of them, and his absence leaves a gaping hole in their group. He isn't gone forever, not really, but being in a town like Inaba, you get used to having your friends just down the street. Within hours, their leader will be back in the big city, and who knows just how long he'll stay there, considering his parents?

It's probably a better idea to head to the Junes food court if he wants to stew in misery with his friends. While their leader's departure at the train station had been full of smiles, laughter, and tears, Yosuke has a pretty strong feeling that the empty space left behind by their leader will be hitting them all soon enough, hard and at the same time.

Yosuke collapses onto his bed, bouncing a little as he stares at the ceiling. He'll leave in a bit, a little alone time is in order.

What now? is the most prevalent thought sitting at the front of his mind. He won't lie, a part of him is worried that without anything particularly exciting going on, he'll start to get bored of the town again. But it's only a small tinge of doubt, and he hopes it'll stay buried under the memories he'll make with his friends. They still have the rest of high school ahead of them, after all. Even without their Leader, he still has everyone else, and he knows they'll always be around to entertain him. They'll always be there for him, and he'll always be there for them. Even if they like to squeeze free food out of him, or kick him in the nuts, or whine incessantly into his ear, or maybe even rough house with him a bit. Those sorts of things made them them, and he honestly wouldn't give that up for the world. In fact, he hadn't, and the peaceful world on the other side of the television is enough proof of that.

Man, look at him, getting all sentimental. Yosuke smiles to himself a little and sits up. Maybe he can get to Junes a little early. If the rest of the gang isn't there already, then he can indulge himself with a little more alone time. If not, then he can bum around with them until he remembers to do his homework, if that happens at all.
